Sweden stocked up on masks, "turned around" during the Covid-19 epidemic

Unlike most other European countries, Sweden still allows many businesses, restaurants and schools to stay open and discourages the use of face masks, in contrast to neighboring countries such as Denmark and Na Norway or Finland.

However, two weeks after the Department of Public Health (FHM) said it might publish new recommendations, Swedes seem to be starting to stock up on face masks. Sales of face masks at the online pharmacy Apotea have increased to about 400,000 pieces per week in the past two or three weeks. Before that, sales were only about 150,000 units/week.

A spokesman for Apoteket pharmacy revealed that their sales of masks also increased by 30% during the same period, to the point that weekly sales are equivalent to full year sales.

To date, Sweden still rejects the recommendation or mandatory wearing of masks in public. Leading Swedish virologist Anders Tegnell says masks are not very effective and can lead to a false sense of security for the wearer.

However, during a press conference on August 18, FHM general manager Johan Carlson said there may be circumstances in which the wearing of masks should be encouraged, such as when going to the hospital or using public transport.

Since the Covid-19 epidemic appeared in Europe, Sweden has attracted the world's attention thanks to its completely opposite way of fighting the epidemic. The country has helped the international community determine what happens when the government allows life to go on normally during the pandemic. Not only has the number of deaths thousands higher than those in neighboring countries with blockade orders, but the Swedish economy has also barely progressed.

Sweden's death rate is much higher than in neighboring countries. However, this number is still lower than European countries with strict blockade orders such as the UK and Spain. As of the morning of September 1 (Vietnam time), Sweden has 84,379 cases of Covid-19 and 5,808 deaths.

In a press conference on August 31, FHM said that Sweden's Covid-19 vaccine program could be launched as early as 2021 but that precautionary measures will still be in place for the foreseeable future.

Mr. Carlson said people 70 years of age and older, those with underlying medical conditions and health care workers will be prioritized in the program. Meanwhile, children under 18 will not need the vaccine.

Also at the press conference, Richard Bergstrom, Sweden's vaccine coordinator, said the vaccine program could start in the first quarter of 2021 but "in limited numbers". He cautioned that there are still uncertainties, such as how effective the vaccine will be in different groups of patients.

"We must note that the first vaccine batch from Sweden is produced using new technologies that have not been tested. Currently the vaccine is in clinical trials with the participation of about 10,000–300,000 patients. " - Xinhua news agency quoted Mr. Bergstrom.

At the beginning of August, Sweden announced that it could provide vaccines to about 3-6 million of its citizens after the European Union (EU) and Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical joint venture AstraZeneca reached an agreement. potential vaccine deal.
